Free-Hand Representation for Architects workshop
|
|
The focus of this workshop is to introduce students to the requisite skills of free-hand manual drawing for architects. The student will be introduced to the necessary skills to draw from observation. He/she will sketch objects, compositions of more than one object, perspectives of interiors and exteriors using graphite pencils, pen ink, markers and colors (colored pencils and/or watercolors). The workshop will include an introduction for final manual architectural rendering and representation. He/she should have the skills of choosing an observed captured scene showing the ability of drawing single objects, different compositions, interior and exterior perspective, shade and shadow, materials, with a suitable foreground and background, by using different mentioned medias (graphite pencils, pen and ink, colors and markers) in a single or in a mixed way. The workshop will include an introduction of conceptualization and diagramming, and how he/she can represent a concept or an idea through a simple sketching, as well as gaining the skills of final architectural rendering techniques and representation.

Learning Outcomes
After successfully completing this workshop the participant will:
- Understand the importance of freehand sketching as an Architectural Language through developing the skills of architectural basic rendering techniques.
- Learn how to ‘See through Sketching’ and gain the skills of a ‘drawing eye’ and a ‘seeing hand.’ Eventually drawing what you see not what you ‘think you see’.
- Understand the basic rules of tone scale in an achromatic medium.
- Understand the differences between mediums (graphite pencil, pen, ink, colored pencils, markers and watercolors), and to have the ability to single use one of them or mix in use between them, to having a fast sketch or a represented rendered drawing.
- Exhibit a satisfactory of knowledge of how each medium is appropriate for specific types of drawings (markers or soft, broad pencils for fast sketching, pencil for fine details of form and light, cross-hatching, and washes, etc.)
- Understand the main orthographic projection concepts and be able to draw 2D architectural drawings (plan – section – elevation).
- Understand basic color theory (contrast, complementary) and learn how to mix colors.
- To be able to render various materials connected to architecture spaces (interiors & exteriors).
- To understand basic rules of perspective (one vanishing point / two or more vanishing points).
- To grasp the principles of shades and shadows to be able to create depth.
- To understand the basic rules of composition between more than one object.
- Introduced to the habit of using a sketchbook.
- To gain the skills of drawing a quick sketch form memory as well as from observation, as a step forward to be able to draw from imagination.
- To have a general introduction to the theory & history of architecture through sketching, by visiting a heritage place in a field trip and sketching form contemporary architects’ drawings or projects.
- To enable the student to become more critical and analytical about his own sketching.
- To gain the ability to better expresses their ideas in visual and conceptual formats.
- Introduction to the course main objectives, the problematic of rendering, tools and techniques. Why Sketching?
- Graphite Pencil Sketching.
- Different colored rendering techniques: (Colored Pencils & watercolors).
