MATS research facility and solar plant visit in Borg ElArab

iHub is going to provide a visit opportunity to MATS plant in Borg ElArab. This is a solar thermal CSP plant with heat storage and water desalination.

The MATS plant is comprised of an integrated concentrated solar power (CSP) and water desalination facility with a capacity that can serve a community of 1000 people in a desert area. The plant is the first of its kind in the world that features this level of environmental friendliness, easy management and flexibility of operations. In addition, this experimental plant serves a launching pad for scaling this technology and developing the project into a full-fledged research and development center for renewable energy.

This visit will empower students to:
  • Gain a first-hand knowledge of how a novel combined power + water generation plant is designed and constructed.
  • Witness how solar energy can be harnessed into electrical power and desalinated water useful for the surrounding community.
  • Observe how a research-informed prototype power plant is taken into full construction and commissioning.
  • Witness a first of its kind thermal energy storage in Egypt, and how this technology is integrated into the power plant design.
  • Understand a number of operational challenges pertaining to the solar thermal power generation.

Eligible Students:
We're welcoming for senior students in Mechanical Power Department and the Energy Program.
NB: The first priority will goes to Credit program students.
