Workshop Description:
This course gives a hands-on introduction and training on Optical MEMS design. The course is divided into three main modules:
  1. The first module covers the theoretical background needed.
  2. The second module involves hands-on training for the students to design and simulate using state of the art CAD tools used in the design process.
  3. The third module involves hands-on experimental lab work.

Module 1: Theoretical Background (5 days)
  • Introduction
  • FTIR spectrometer System
  • Micro-optical bench Technology
  • Optical Beams
  • Design of MEMS devices

Module 2: Simulation tools (3 days)
  • ZEMAX: Sequential ray tracing
  • ZEMAX: Non-sequential ray tracing
  • ANSYS: MEMS analysis

Module 3: Experimental work ( 3 days)
  • MEMS FTIR spectroscopy
  • Optical fiber characterization
  • Characterization of MEMS Actuators

Those who excel in this course are eligible to join as an R&D student to assist in efforts that may lead to publications in reputable conferences and journals.
